Is Gel Manicure Better Than Regular Manicure?

Is Gel Manicure Better Than Regular Manicure?

One of the most common questions our nail technicians at Franck Provost Laysen Valley hear is: “Should I get a gel manicure or a regular one?” It’s a great question, and the honest answer is: it depends. Both have genuine advantages, and the right choice comes down to your lifestyle, nail health, and how long you want your manicure to last.

This guide breaks down the real differences — so you can make an informed choice before your next appointment.

What Is a Regular Manicure?

A regular manicure (also called a traditional or polish manicure) involves:

  1. Soaking or softening the hands
  2. Cuticle care and nail shaping
  3. Application of a base coat, two coats of regular nail polish, and a top coat
  4. Air-drying time (typically 15–20 minutes)

The entire service usually takes 30–45 minutes. It’s accessible, affordable, and offers maximum colour variety.

The limitation: Regular nail polish chips. In active daily life — typing, cleaning, cooking, working out — a regular manicure typically lasts 5–10 days before visible chipping begins.

What Is a Gel Manicure?

A gel manicure uses a specially formulated gel polish that is cured (hardened) under an LED or UV lamp after each layer. The process involves:

  1. Nail preparation and cuticle care
  2. Application of a gel base coat, two gel colour coats, and a gel top coat
  3. LED curing between each layer
  4. No drying time — nails are fully set immediately

The result is a high-shine, chip-resistant finish that lasts 2–4 weeks under normal conditions. Removal requires either acetone soaking or filing.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose a regular manicure if:

  • You like to change your nail colour frequently (every week or two)
  • You’re preparing for a specific event and want a fresh colour the day before
  • You prefer to do your own at-home maintenance or removal
  • Budget is a consideration

Choose a gel manicure if:

  • You want your manicure to last longer without chipping
  • You have an active lifestyle or work with your hands
  • You’re going on holiday or to an event and want low-maintenance nails
  • You want immediate, fully set nails with no drying wait

What About BIAB?

If you have thin, brittle, or damaged nails, we often recommend BIAB (Builder In A Bottle) — a third option that outperforms both standard gel and regular polish. BIAB is a thick builder gel applied directly to the natural nail, adding structure and strength while looking completely natural. It lasts up to 4–6 weeks and actively supports nail growth rather than damaging it.

Does Gel Damage Your Nails?

This is one of the most common concerns, and it’s worth addressing directly. Gel manicures do not inherently damage nails — but improper removal does. Picking or peeling off gel polish strips layers of the natural nail along with it. This is the main cause of thin, weak, damaged nails after gel.

At Franck Provost Laysen Valley, we take nail health seriously. Our technicians always remove gel with the correct acetone-soak method, applied with precision to minimise contact with the surrounding skin. We also offer nail health treatments to strengthen and restore nails between services.
